Faq - Programs Offered

What are the courses and programs
offered at NABA?

ACADEMIC DEGREES (IN ITALIAN)

NABA offers a wide range of academic degrees, valid in all European countries and in all countries outside Europe that have a bilateral agreement with Italy on recognition of academic qualifications. Each program is linked to a specific numberof European University Credits (CFU). All of the Academy's three-year courses are fully legally recognised by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). At the end of the academic course, having passed all the necessary exams and having presented a thesis, students are awarded the "Academic Diploma", legally valid (for state exams, teaching and some professional exams). The Academic Diploma is equivalent in all EU countries to the diploma of HIGHER EDUCATION and to the BACHELOR OF ARTS Honours and gives graduates right of access to the European Degree Courses for the diploma of Master of Arts (M.A. Honours) and also qualifies them to do a PhD in Arts Universities across Europe and in countries outside Europe which have a bilateral agreement with Italy on recognition of academic qualifications.

INTERIOR DESIGN - NEW DOMESTIC LANDSCAPES
This master contains two distinctive areas of activity: the first involves a series of theoretical and cultural seminars with contemporary historians, journalists, anthropologists, sociologists and artists who will help to trace the boundaries of domestic living in a variety of international scenarios. The second involves a series of project workshops with interior designers, light designers and experts in innovative and ecological materials who will help students build new design project scenarios. Each project will be executed as a real-life simulation in which the master program partners' technical experts and managers will involve the students and work together to create experimental design scenarios.

Detailed programs can be found on:
www.master-naba.com

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES
International undergraduate students interested in gaining an educational experience in Italy, but not full enrolment on the three-year degree program, are offered other opportunities.

DIPLOMA PROGRAMS
Students who have completed only 11 years of education before applying to NABA, can ask to enrol in the three-year Diploma Programs.
Diploma Programs have the same curricula and the same examinations as the BA Programs, however they lead to the awarding of a NABA diploma.

To enrol in Diploma Programs, students have to send a portfolio (not returnable) and a document attesting their previous studies, however they do not need to have them translated and legalised by the closest Italian Embassy or Consulate, nor to ask for the Value Declaration Certificate. Before being admitted to a Diploma Program, students will have to take an admission examination. In order to get the final transcripts, students will have to pass all the exams in the subjects included in the course curriculum.

Diploma Programs also foresee students' access to the second and third year with the Transfer Student status.

For further information, please contact:int.info@naba.it

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

These programs are intended for students who do not want to commit to attend a long-term educational path and desire to follow only one year of the Diploma Program or a more tailormade curriculum.

Certificate Program students are not required to pass an admission examination, however they will have to agree a suitable study plan with NABA Program Coordinators before enrolling. Certificate Programs lead to the attainment of an attendance certificate.

Students wishing to obtain more detailed transcripts have to sit for the examinations of the subjects included in the study plan defined with NABA Program Coordinators.

Applicants are highly suggested to enrol by the end of June as NABA can only accept a limited number of students in these programs.

Applications sent after that deadline might not be considered.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS (IN ENGLISH)
NABA has developed a set of programs in English specifically designed for international students. These programs include semester abroad courses, summer courses and one-year master programs. The structure of the one-year master programs follows the indications of the Italian Ministry of University (MIUR) and therefore issues 60 European Credits, while summer and semester programs follow the structure of the US university system.

SEMESTER/YEAR ABROAD PROGRAMS

Starting dates: September and January
Intermediate level (open to 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students enrolled in International Universities, subject to the fulfilment of set prerequisites). These programs are developed in cooperation with a network of international universities and aim to respond to the educational needs of students who wish to spend a semester or a year in Italy to study, in English, in the areas of Fashion, Design, Visual Arts, and Communication. They follow specific syllabi defined in cooperation with the University concerned and change every year. US college/university students can obtain US transfer credits delivered by the concerned US university. (One semester corresponds to 15 US university credits).

PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY/NABA CENTER FOR DESIGN
In conjunction with Philadelphia University (USA), NABA offers a unique semester abroad program specifically designed to fill the needs of Design and Fashion Management students who wish to receive a US university credit transfer in the following ways:

1) To develop an understanding of design culture in Italy.
2) To permit students to come to understand the rise of Milan as a principal design, and design marketing/managing capital, pursuing their studies in English.
3) To use Milan as an open laboratory and permit access to its many resources, facilitating the ability of students to think about design - and to function as designers and design managers - in a more international manner. Majors of study presently include: Fashion Merchandising/Fashion Industry Management; Graphic Design; and Industrial/Product Design. A program in Interior Design is under development; please inquire. In addition to courses in the above majors, students may also take courses in Italian Language, Contemporary Italian Society, and History of Italian Design. For a complete program description, contact the NABA International Relations office or visit: www.philau.edu/coopsa/Study_abroad.htm

SUMMER PROGRAMS
NABA offers a wide choice of Summer Courses: Introduction, Intermediate (Studio Level) and Advanced Level courses.

The Summer Courses propose a wide and updated synthesis of NABA know-how, giving a view of the most significant trends of the market, of industrial creation processes, of artistic and social expression, of Design, Fashion, Graphic and Communication, together with the opportunity to experiment a topical project theme, under the guidance of renowned professionals and in cooperation with big companies.

Introduction Level Courses are intended for students without academic background on a specific subject area and offer a unique opportunity to explore a new creative environment. Students will learn from experienced and skilled professionals and will be taught how to research and present a creative idea. These courses will concentrate on experimentation within the creative design process.

Intermediate Level courses meet the needs of students with previous knowledge in that specific subject area who are keen on building upon this through an intensive and specialised training experience. Students will be immersed in a design environment simulating a professional studio, gaining profound insight into the technical components of the design process.

Advanced Level Courses are developed in collaboration with Accademia alla Scala and are intended for students attending the last years of University in the specific subject areas dealt with in the summer courses and for professionals in those specific fields who want to make a hands-on training experience in Italy.

Selected visits to museums, companies, production sites and design studios during the programs expose students to the creative and cultural environment in Italy.

Parsons Paris and Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano present:
From Haute Couture to Prêt-à-Porter
A Paris to Milan Summer Fashion Program
This course is an intensive on-site investigation of the Parisian and Milanese fashion scenes. Current fashion trends are examined and contextualized within a historical study of haute couture and prêt-à-porter, giving students a broad understanding of the distinct fashion cultures in both cities. Guided visits to museums and exhibitions, observation of trends in boutiques and design studios, and lectures by fashion designers and experts will help students discover what makes these fashion capitals unique, as well as the commonalities that define the European fashion industry as a whole. Hands-on studio experiences will reinforce students' understanding of the creative process in fashion, and enable them to draw parallels to their own cultural heritage, style, and personality.

At the end of their stay in each city, students will produce a visual summary, working individually in the second week and collaboratively in the fourth week; these projects will be informed by documented research collected in sketchbooks, diaries, and photographs. The course is recommended for aspiring fashion designers and for students interested in fashion management, fashion journalism, and cultural trends in fashion.
